Chosen Mother Grateful, Excited

Habitat home will ease difficulties for handicapped son

Tammy Floyd is a single mother with two sons, D’Jonte M. Douthitt, age 12 and Isaiah T. Simms, age 7. Tammy heard about this handicapped accessible home through her friend and said, “Since my oldest son has Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair, I thought this home could be perfect for my family and a blessing from God if we were to be approved.”  When asked how building and buying a Habitat for Humanity home would impact her family, Tammy replied, “I am a single mother  of two beautiful boys and have been trying to provide the best for my family. I am currently in nursing school and will be graduating soon which will allow me to enter the nursing field and earn more money. This will also better equip me to take care of my son. Having a child with any disability is a lot of work and buying this home will make things a lot easier to care for him.  Simply having the wider doorways, a ramp to easily get into our home, and everything being on one level is going to make things so much easier. I will no longer have to ask my mom to come over to help me carry my own son into our apartment because he will be able to come into his home on his own because we will have no more steps!

"This is going to be awesome for all of us!  I had my son when I was only 15 years old and when he was born, he was not breathing and developed some serious health issues. From that point on, my life stopped being about me and my focus has been on D’Jonte ever since. Everything I do, and I have done, has been for him in hopes in making his life more complete. He is my source of strength and gives me the will to keep going on because even though he been through so much his entire life, he still smiles each day. I have had to place him temporarily in a MR/DD residential facility and then he stays at our apartment part-time. I have promised him that he will be coming home soon permanently, and thanks to Cincinnati Habitat , Ferguson and the volunteers, I am able to keep my promise to my baby. My kids are my life and I want them to be in a safe environment so that we can sit in our yard without worrying about gun shots. So, I will do my part to keep my area clean, and respectful. Thanks so much, this is truly a blessing!

“My 7 year old son, Isaiah, goes to TCP World Academy and has been on the honor roll since he started. Being a single mom is really hard. When I come home from nursing school I need to cook dinner, help with homework, get him to bed and then start my own homework and then everything starts all over the next day. It has been really tough, but thanks to the Lord, we are still standing.  Buying this home means so much to me and my family. It means that my son can come home and spend time with his younger brother whom he loves so much. It means that I don’t have to worry about how I am going to carry my son in his wheelchair into his home or up the stairs in our apartment and into a bath tub. This home will provide us with stability, a foundation and a new beginning. We will be a family again! Thanks so much to Ferguson my house sponsor, Cincinnati Habitat, Marissa Woodly, and especially to all of the volunteers!!! You have made my dreams come true and I can’t wait to start building!"
